proThe National Veterans Resource Center (NVRC) at Syracuse University in New York is a one-of-a-kind educational facility. SHoP Architects created a thoughtful design that artfully accommodates the building’s many uses with meeting areas, classrooms, offices and airy public gathering spaces. A stunning 21,300-square foot thin-ply cross-laminated timber (CLT) feature wall comprises 12,274 CLT Douglas fir planks and spruce panels arranged in a segmented 1/3 running bond pattern, all fabricated by Structure Fusion based in Québec, Canada. The wall wraps around the exterior of the central auditorium, forming a canopy over the lobby and exhibition and event spaces. To enhance the warmth of the wood and provide flame spread protection, Precision Coat SDF FR was selected to coat all of the CLT planks exposed to view. Sansin FireStop97 was applied on all of the wood that is concealed within the walls and ceilings.
