Manufacturers have made and continue to make the most significant investments in production and distribution channels for a wide range of CASE products in many segments. In some cases, they have their own retail operations across the country. They are the most heavily impacted by changes to existing regulations. CPCA manufacturers contribute substantially to the success of the entire industry and by extension those supplying products in all other membership classes.
Manufacturers consist of producers of paint, stains and varnishes, lacquers, primers, sealers, under coaters, topcoats, base coats, UV coatings, powder coatings, and roof coatings or kindred products, such as but not limited to adhesives and sealants, removers, thinners, putties, surface cleaners, fillers artists’ colours in key segments: Industrial coatings usually factory-applied to manufactured goods as part of the production process to decorate and protect a wide variety of products, including motor vehicles, appliances, beverage cans, furniture, machinery and electrical equipment (OEM). Common use of industrial coatings for corrosion control of steel structures such as offshore platforms and underground pipelines; maintenance coatings especially intended for the repair/touch up of furniture, container, machinery, aircraft, roofs, etc., or “special purpose coatings.” OEM Coatings are formulated specifically for original equipment manufacturers to meet product requirements applied as part of the manufacturing process. Suppliers provide critical raw materials that ensure manufacturers can produce ‘best in class’ highly functional products demanded by their customers. As such suppliers have a strong interest in ensuring the CASE industry remains viable and sustainable in Canada supporting the continued growth of their companies.
Paint and coating manufacturers rely on a wide range of raw materials produced by suppliers for inputs required in formulated products, including items such as binders/resins, additives, pigments, water or mineral solvents, and specific minerals. Raw materials widely used in paint manufacturing include pigments (titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, etc), solvents (mineral turpentine) as well as resins and various additives, synthetic polymers, including high-volume resins such as alkyds, acrylics, vinyls, epoxies, and urethanes, or lower-volume specialty resins such as polyesters, phenolics, and silicones. There are also smaller quantities of a large number of other chemicals such as thickeners, biocides, plasticizers, dispersants, defoamers, ultraviolet absorbers, driers, emulsifiers, and adhesion promoters. Bio-based and environmentally friendly raw materials and additives are now well-established in the industry.

Distributors represent the interests of raw material suppliers to also ensure critical ingredients get to CASE manufacturers across Canada. As such, they also have a strong interest in ensuring CPCA’s advocacy work will sustain the reputation of their materials and the brand owners using them.
Distributors represent raw material suppliers to enhance their ability and professionalism in servicing second and third-tier customers especially as it relates to logistics allowing suppliers to focus their attention on fulfilling accounts with materials manufacturers’ demand. Distributors often have complementary product lines, which allow them to offer bundling and/or batches of multiple products customers need. Small and large distributors create value by expanding the services they offer, which include technical capabilities and end-market focus with continued collaboration with suppliers and customers. Distributors are trained to market and sell many different items and have access to a wide variety of resources from their suppliers and customer base.

Many allied industries benefit from supplying CPCA member companies in various ways. Therefore the success of these allied industries rely to some extent on the success of the CASE industry in Canada, which is CPCA’s primary objective.
Allied Industries often work with CPCA and/or have common members focused on the same outcomes and collaborate on common concerns such as developing legislation and regulations, new standard-setting approaches, and common initiatives related to sustainability and HSE issues.
