Tales from the Trenches

This session will provide business observations on the post-pandemic Coatings Industry value chain from a global consulting firms’ key takeaways based on first-hand experiences advising clients during a tumultuous time. These observations will focus on supply chain conditions, R&D efforts, M&A activities, and strategic planning across the spectrum of multinational and national companies.

Switchable Systems on the Road to ESG Coatings

Coatings companies are now on the road to more ESG products, this session will address interesting research in the field of more sustainable solvents, surfactants, polymers and greener coatings and surfaces. How will biomass conversion and separation lead to products from biobased materials like algae and lignin in the months and years ahead? Will there be real alternatives that sustain the performance of existing chemicals in commerce?

Economy: A Key Pillar of Sustainability

Often forgotten, one of the three pillars of sustainability is the economy. The session will lay out some of the numbers in the CASE industry over the past several years looking at the ups and downs, the challenges, and the successes it what was a mixed bag of numbers over. The session will also cover the recently updated Economic Impact Study on the coatings industry in Canada completed by Orr & Boss There may be surprises for some on the numbers and a bit of a forecast for the Canadian market and markets around the world more generally.

Extended Producer Responsibility

What’s going on the world of paint waste recycling? How much is it costing manufacturers who pay 100% of the total costs? Can we expect more costs or less going forward? So many questions requiring so many answers. This session will get all up to speed in the constantly evolving world of paint collection, recycling, etc. in what some argue is an over-regulated world in some Provinces.

Coatings Sustainability: The Future is Now

More than at any time in the past, coatings are increasingly on the cutting edge of sustainability. This has only happened because the industry has clearly been among global leaders on innovation, building new research facilities, developing new technologies, and with market-driven solutions for customers. That is the case whether it is for architectural or industrial applications. The future is moving quickly to a new, low carbon approach to business, which will be very different 10 years from now as much as it was 10 years ago.

The View from the South

Canada and the United States operate in a highly integrated economy and what happens in one country affects the other and vice versa. Who’s hurting who and what can we learn from the other? That is the question this session will try to address and look at key areas from a different lens related to VOC, chemical assessment, biocides and more. Is regulatory alignment really necessary and what happens if it’s not? Good question!

Gary LeRoux, President & CEO

2:30 — 3:00

Time for Your Regulatory Check-Up

The fire hose of regulations seemed to have been turned up on high over the past two years with no end in sight for the chemical sectors. This session will look at the impacts on the industry now and potentially into the future. It will assess what has been done to date and what must be done to address emerging issues in future like legislative change and the state of chemicals management; where is Canada headed on new VOC limits and will we ever get there; the cancelation of critical biocides and its impact on paint preservation; and new sustainability initiatives impacting industry and the marketplace more generally.

A New Vision for Paint Formulation

Innovation in the CASE industry continues at a rapid pace. The formulation world continues to evolve in terms of ingredients used in thousands of CASE products. Dow has focused on innovative ways to compare ingredients and order samples used in product formulation that includes digitizing material selection in paint and coatings. This effort seeks to address challenges faced by paint formulators in meeting increasing demands of their end-users to optimize both production and innovation time needed to enhance their formulations. This session profiles a unique way to overcome application challenges with a ‘new paint vision’ for the future.

Discussion Panel
3:45 — 4:30

Challenging Times, Better Days Ahead?

This session includes four panelists representing companies in the manufacturing and supplier/distribution classes of membership and ongoing challenges from their perspective in the coatings value chain. The past several saw severe supply chain constraints due to Covid-19, fallout from the war in Europe and inflationary pressures generally. Are there key takeaways and lessons learned? What might the future hold and are we ready? Are better times ahead in the CASE industry in Canada? Find out the answers to these and other questions in this highly interactive session with the panel and audience.
